Here is a comment I received over email:

"I watched Foyle’s War ,every episode when it first ran and then about 8 years later again. Michael Kitchen is from the Humphrey Bogart school of acting. His facial expressions says it all. "

Why won’t you re-watch Outlander? I haven’t seen it yet and don’t know why I resist doing so. Curious.

Another reader sent me this message:

"Hi Phyllis,

Great email as ever.

Regarding what he media are saying about the LA riots, it reminds me of this quote from Orwell's 1984:

The Party told you to ignore the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

Have we already reached that stage?"

Mindy and I have gone through the entire series twice. It is up there with my all-time favorites. The creator of the series is Anthony Horowitz, who brilliantly wove in several Jewish storylines.

A subscriber emailed me this comment:

"We also enjoy Foyles War when it is repeated, which it hasn't been for a while.

15 years ago for her 60th birthday I treated my cousin to a coach trip from Essex to Hastings for a walking tour of the Foyles War sites which was good although to our shame we sloped off for tea towards the end.

The white house was used for Foyles home outside. And the old town is lovely in itself and I have visited several times. The Battle of Hastings took place some miles away, inland at a place now called Battle, after the Battle Abbey that was built by the site, which you can still walk across. It has never been built on, and never should be.

If you have not already discovered them you might enjoy Shetland and Vera. They are modern, but the same ethos, old fashioned decent police officers of principle trying keep decency afloat."

foyle was ranked the most enjoyed/missed show of the 20th century. i dont know if there is a soul who didnt regard it.

horowitz wrote so many mysteries, plus his own books. superb...

cost was a primary reason for cancelling the show. every single teensy detail was period, and it cost a fortune. it was horowitz and the producers who out the kabosh on the show. the actors all loved it.

filmed mostly in ireland. england had gotten too modern...

*

foyle is very jewish. as above, several episodes involved the holocaust. and foyle, himself, was moral: 20th century moral...

a favorite moment was episode 2, when an antisemitic public speaker asked foyle if he were jewish. foyle was silent, his gaze didnt shift.

every episode was taken from actual history. horowitz had a formula: each of the 28 episodes was a conglomerate of 3 separate stories, woven together.

ive seen the series over 10 times. a bright spot in a very amoral world...

a treasure, with a remarkable cast to pull

it off...

thank you...

I also loved Foyle's War. Why are there are so few excellent series? Kitchen is outstanding. Such a source of comfort to watch and get lost in time for awhile. Phyllis, have you watched Band of Brothers? It isn't at all the same kind of series, but it gave me the same feeling of being immersed in something worthwhile. I've only rewatched Foyle's War once--it did go on for quite a few seasons, but I turn to Band of Brothers at least once a year. It is based on true characters, and it brings in the surviving WWII soldiers for very brief comments at the end of every few episodes. Thanks for reminding me of Foyle's War.

I absolutely love Micheal Kitchen and Honeysuckle Weeks and this whole show. It’s the world as I knew it right down to the drab ‘government green’ walls of the police station.

I lived and went to school in Hastings probably 15 years after the time of Foyle’s War and it was not much different.

I go back and watch it at any opportunity and totally love the music as well.

I’ve never watched Outlander but wonder why you don’t watch it having described it as excellent.

I answered someone else about this. Because the lead actor signs petitions against Israel. I’ve had it with such celebrities.

And I’ll go ahead and ask; ‘Why won’t you watch ‘Oulander’ again?’

Phyllis Chesler's avatar

HA! Because their lead actor, a very gorgous guy, signs petitions against Israel and for Palestine. Shame! Usually I do not confused the work with the creator…and yet, this time, I may actually have had enough.

The temptation was to watch ‘Foyle’s War’ but, between reading sooo many excellent Substacks (including yours!), Bible study, correspondences, and LIFE, I don’t know that I can spare the time!

As for ‘Oulander’, I am with you on that completely! I choose not to give my time, attention, or money to any person, group, or organization that uses their influence and/or finances in ways that serve to add fuel to the fires of antisemitism, ‘anti-Zionism’, and anti-Israelism that is running rampant in the world today.

On the contrary, as, when, and how opportunities present themselves, I do what I can, G-d guiding and helping me, to counter lies, half-truths, misrepresentations, and ignorance with the truth. It’s a ‘target-rich environment’ these days!

However, one of the principal ‘fruits’ of postmodern relativism - particularly through it’s wicked child, ‘woke’ philosophy, is a tragic resistance to, and antagonism towards, the very concept of truth.

From a Biblical perspective, this is a result of spiritual warfare, and an associated blinding psychosis that is increasingly manifesting, the work of ‘the god of this world’, Lucifer, aka, ‘Satan’. This psychosis, preying upon fallen human nature, renders the world increasingly vulnerable to deception and very dangerous mass manipulation.

Only the true and living G-d can defeat the evil that threatens our world. Only He can ‘set the captives free’ of the bonds of sin that hold them in an iron grip.

Just as the children of Israel had to look upon the bronze serpent raised in the wilderness to be saved, so must all look to the G-d of Israel to be saved today. BUT (Behold the Underlying Truth), they must do so with a genuine love for the truth; a love that will compel them to accept what is revealed, no matter what it may personally cost.

Tragically, it is precisely that love that is missing in the lives of multitudes today. Consequently, they are going to fall deeper and deeper into deception, and ‘…are headed for destruction because they would not receive the love of the truth that could have saved them.’ 2 Thessalonians 2:10b (CJB)

But, those who love and seek to honor G-d, and therefore have that genuine love and desire to know and honor the truth, will ultimately find what they seek - and be saved.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NKJV)

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.“

And, although they may have to struggle to comprehend painful spiritual truths, sooner or later, in this life or the next, they will be led to recognize the provision G-d has made for the redemption of mankind, is through the sacrifice of His Son, Yeshua - who was and is, the promised Messiah of the Jews.

John 14:6 (CJB)

“Yeshua said, "I AM the Way—and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through me.”

Am Israel Chai!

I had the worst crush on Michael Kitchens! About to watch it again after all seasons of “As Time Goes By” but switched to “Lark Rise to Candleford” since the war with Iran started. Pretty much only watch Brit Box. So few actors anymore are not pro-Palestinian. Refuse to watch them, too.
