What a terrible story. Not your telling of it, but the facts of it. I won’t go into detail what I would have done as manager, or even usher. Let’s just say that accidents can happen at any time. Gravity’s a force to be reckoned with.

Here’s an alternative story: as a visitor to the city where I once lived, I am rediscovering its charms (it has many!) for a few weeks. After seeing Oppenheimer in IMAX, I missed two buses back to back (a cardinal sin in transportation) that would have whisked me to my front door, during a downpour no less, but caught the local Broadway bus that lurched and wheezed its way uptown. I let four others board before me, was thanked, and took a seat in the backmost row. Shortly into my journey of 45 blocks, a small child’s face peered at me. He was looking for two seats together for himself and his mother. I caught her eye, and waved her over, giving up my seat (and the empty one next to me) so she and her son could sit together. She also thanked me, but it was no big deal: I took a single seat.

My point: it WAS no big deal. Anyone can do what I did (and many do, regularly); anyone can say thank you. And smile. And say you're welcome. And feel better about themselves and a world where courtesies live not as empty gestures, but as small tokens of kindness made greater by being offered freely. I am no one special—if you knew me, you wouldn’t argue—but this is a grace available to all. I like to think it’s at least mildly contagious, even if your nemesis above seems immune. What a living hell her life must be. Told you I was nothing special.

They “ hate” Russia and are bereft of any music appreciation but for Taylor Swift, Lizzo and Lil’ Wayne.

I wouldn’t expect them to enjoy the genius of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Prokofiev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky or for that matter, Beethoven, Mozart, Saint Saen, Grieg, Vivaldi, Debussy, Ravel, Bizet,Boieldieu or even Gershwin, Dick Dale,Hendrix , Led Zeppelin.
